This data or instruction is then sent to the CPU, where it is processed to produce the desired result. The most commonly used input devices are the keyboard and mouse. However, there are several other input devices that are used depending on the requirement, such as: Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) Mark Sense Reader (MSR) These devices are used in different fields for specific purposes. Keyboard The keyboard is one of the most commonly used input devices. It looks very similar to a traditional typewriter but has several additional keys. The most commonly used keyboard is the QWERTY keyboard, which generally has 104 keys. Modern multimedia keyboards may include extra keys for functions such as controlling volume, playing music, or launching applications. Mouse The mouse is another widely used input device. It is a pointing device that controls the movement of the cursor or pointer on the computer screen. A mouse is a small device that is moved across a flat surface. As you move the mouse, the pointer on the screen moves in the same direction. A mouse may have one, two, or three buttons, and the function of these buttons depends on the software or program being used. A mouse is an electro-mechanical device and is also known as a pointing device. In the next episode, we will learn about some other important input devices in detail.
