Computer Fundamentals – Episode 2: How a Computer Works Hello, dear listeners of Hamari Vaani. First of all, congratulations to the participants who answered the question from the previous episode correctly. In Episode 1, we asked: “What are the parts of a computer that can be seen and touched called?” The correct answer is: Hardware. The following participants gave the correct answer: Hari Das Roy Smriti Haldar Sushanta Mondal Ajay Modak Congratulations and thank you to all of you for your participation. Now, let us begin today’s topic. In the previous episode, we learned about the basic concepts of computers, hardware, and software. Today, we will learn how a computer works and understand its main functions. The working of a computer can be understood through a block diagram. The main components of a computer are the Input Unit, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Memory Unit, and Output Unit. The CPU contains two important components: Control Unit (CU) and Arithmetic and Logical Unit (ALU). The working of a computer can be broadly divided into four main steps. 1. Receive Input A computer accepts data or instructions from the user through various input devices such as a keyboard, mouse, scanner, etc. 2. Process Information The computer performs arithmetic calculations and logical operations on the received data. This task is mainly carried out by the CPU. 3. Store Information The processed information is stored for future use in storage devices such as a hard disk, CD, pen drive, etc. 4. Produce Output After processing the information, the computer communicates the results to the user through output devices such as a monitor, printer, and others. Different hardware components of a computer specialize in performing one or more of these functions. Computer hardware can generally be divided into two categories: Processing Hardware Peripheral Devices The main component of processing hardware is the Central Processing Unit (CPU). As the name suggests, it is the part where data processing takes place. On the other hand, peripheral devices allow users to interact with the CPU. Together, these components make it possible to use a computer for a wide variety of tasks. In the next episode, we will discuss the different components of a computer system in greater detail. Today's Question Question: Which part of the computer performs the main task of processing information? Please record and send us your answer. The names of the participants who provide the correct answer will be announced in the next episode.
