Manisha Shammi contacted the TechSakhi helpline in a state of deep mental stress and anxiety after her husband fell victim to an online shopping scam. Manisha had seen an advertisement for medicine on Facebook, where the price was significantly lower than at regular medical stores. The ad featured messages like "Limited Time Offer" and "Stock is Selling Fast," which prompted them to make a quick decision to order. Method of Fraud After placing the order, Manisha received a phone call from the seller asking for an advance payment of 1,000 rupees via PhonePe. Even after the payment was made, the medicine was never delivered. When the family tried to contact the seller again, more money was demanded, and they were treated rudely. Guidance from TechSakhi The TechSakhi responder listened patiently and explained that this is a common online shopping scam where fraudsters lure people with heavy discounts. The responder provided the following assistance: Reporting on Facebook: Shared the specific steps on how to report the scam advertisement on the Facebook platform. Legal Action: Advised the family to file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the 1930 helpline so that appropriate action could be taken. 41951

Geeta’s aunt received a call from an international number. A woman on the other end, speaking in a very panicked voice, claimed that one of Geeta’s close relatives had met with an accident in Dubai and urgently needed money for medical treatment. Because the fraudster spoke very confidently, Geeta’s aunt believed the story and, out of fear, sent ₹10,000 to that number via GP (GPay). After sending the money, when she tried to contact them again, the fraudster did not answer the call. It was then that they realized it was a scam. 350874
