I am Adv. George Marx from TLRF. I am happy to share about the interesting facts about election. Election commission was formed in the year 1950 January 25th. Its an independent organisation. No political party, or official sector cannot interfere in its duties. It has the power to conduct election for MLA MP Governor. As per Indian constitution article 324, Constitution provides that the power of superintendence, direction and control of elections to parliament, state legislatures and till now its going on. 1st election commissioner was Sukumar Sen IAS. He conducted first Parliamentary election. Just like the facilities we have now, there was not much facilities in those days. He faced many issues in conducting the election due to lack of education among people. He started election work 6 months prior. As first step voters list was prepared. With 16000 field workers eligible voters were listed. Election took place from 1951 October to February 1952. For 489 MP posts, 1989 people participated and more than 55 political parties were involved. In the year 1949 ministry was formed under Nehru's leadership. Many ministers of that group started their party and participated in election. 196000 voting booths and 26 booths were given importance to women. With great challenge he conducted the election. Congress started their ruling under Nehru's leadership with 49% of seats. Sukumaran sen was in that position till 1958. He also 2nd parliamentary election in the year 1957. Mr. Sheshan understood the role better and he is the one who introduced different levels of rules and restrictions for election. Auditing of candidates of expenses was done. Night time campaign was banned. He introduced many changes.

I am Adv. George Marx from TLRF. Everyone are eagerly waiting for April 6 TN assembly election. I am regularly recording about the interesting facts about elections. Now we are directly electing the representatives to Assembly and parliament. The department does this is called as election commission. This was formed in the year 1950. Even during the times of Britishers elections was conducted in our country. Now people who have completed the age of 18 are eligible to vote. But in earlier days without voting rights it was divided into provinces. Now the states are divided on the basis of the language they speak. Those who speak Tamil are in Tamil Nadu, those who speak Malayalam are from Kerala state. Earlier it was called as Provinces and these provinces were ruled by viceroy and Governor. And they were not selected by people rather they were nominated and not all who have attained certain age dont have the right to vote. Those who have assets, those who are paying land tax, those who own land, those who have finished their graduation can only vote. Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar was the first person to voice on giving voting right to everyone. After his this demand, people's representatives should be elected was considered. The round table conference Dr. Ambedkar took part and said all the age attained citizens of India should be given the right to elect their representative. This was criticized by many saying what an illiterate, poor and person without land will do by voting. And many condemned the suggestion of voting right to all age attained citizen. Especially our Father of Nation Gandhi condemned this concept of voting right for all. Later Dr. Ambedkar withdrew his statement and came up with the new proposal of voting right for age attained scheduled caste and tribe people. Britishers accepted this and gave voting right to age attained scheduled caste and tribe people. After that on January 26th, 1950 voting right was given to all age attained scheduled caste and tribe people and all age attained Indian citizens. Till then not everyone had the right to vote. For this the only person who fought was Dr. BR Ambedkar. After 1950 how elections happened? how elections are happening? who were election officers? Lets see all these in forth coming episodes.

I am Adv. George Marx from TLRF. April 6th is an important day for TN because we have TN elections on that day. Election commissioner has has given the dates and political parties are preparing well for elections. We all know about this. India is a largest Democratic country. This country is ruled by the leaders who have been chosen by people during elections. There may be many levels of elections but we popularly know 2 kinds of elections. One is Tamilnadu legislative Assembly elections and Second is, India Lok Sabha elections. In that we cast vote for our MPs and MLAs. Other than this there is a election for Governor and are other state elections too. India election commission conducts all these elections. This commission was formed in the year 1950. This commission conducts the election for elections across the country. Based on that after completion of 5 years Legislative assembly elections are happening. The political party which wins more seats will rule the State. Now the present CM is Edapadi Palanisamy. In next election based on our voting count the party which is going to get more seats will form the leadership. Voting is the right given to every India citizen as the Recognition for being India citizen. Earlier those who have completed the age of 21 can cast their vote. Now those who are above 18 can cast the vote. When Rajeev Gandhi was the PM, the voting age has been reduced from 21 to 18. In this democratic company voting is everyone's responsibility. In next coming episodes lets learn about how much our vote is important, how we got this opportunity etc. Thank you.
